OpenAI's Navier-Stokes solution sparks controversy with NYU researchers
openai claims to have solved a 90-year-old math problem using an internal ai model, but nyu researchers question whether openai accessed their work.
openai revealed a solution to the navier-stokes problem, one of seven millennium prize problems, using an internal ai model more powerful than gpt-6 astra alongside 10,000 concurrent agents. the model was trained starting august 28th and showed 'unprecedented performance in our benchmarks, including mathematics.' however, nyu mathematics professor tristan buckmaster and anthropic researcher levent alpöge published findings on a related problem the day before, raising concerns that openai may have accessed their work. buckmaster claims openai's proof uses a route he and alpöge had been working on with openai's codex and anthropic's claude. openai states 'no specific user data was accessed in order to solve this problem,' but adds that 'de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models.'
