stripe's payment service link reported a 38-fold growth in ai agent transactions and a 20-fold growth in payment volume in september. the company analyzed data from around 70 agents, which has since grown to 200, including meta's muse and grok bot. most agents spend about $100 per transaction, but some users have them book flights or buy furniture worth thousands of dollars. retail made up 36% of transactions and 32% of volume, while travel came next with 28% of volume. stripe's link service issues a separate 16-digit credit card number for agents, allowing users to set spending limits.
