despite openai and nvidia claiming that artificial general intelligence (agi) is imminent, many of the people who built today's ai systems are leaving to start their own research-driven companies. dozens of researchers have departed from big labs like openai, google deepmind, and meta to work on new approaches to agi. these new companies, called 'neolabs', are raising significant amounts of money from investors like nvidia and jeff bezos. the founders of these labs doubt that current methods, which rely on large language models trained on internet data and refined with reinforcement learning, will be enough to achieve agi. they're betting on new recipes to get there.
