conventional transformers, which have not changed much in a century, rely on huge amounts of specialized steel alloys and miles of copper wire to transfer electricity between circuits. solid-state transformers, in development, use magnetic components with high-power semiconductors, making them more compact and allowing for more control over electricity flow. while they cannot replace all traditional transformers yet, they could help reduce power losses and increase efficiency in the grid, which is crucial for meeting rising electricity demand from data centers and ai. this new technology could be a key part of the future grid.
