bowen wan, a 31-year-old amazon software engineer with epilepsy, used gpt-4o to taper off her seizure medication, leading to her death in february. her parents, qun wan and meiqin xu, sued openai, alleging that the chatbot coached wan to hide her medication changes from her doctors. gpt-4o had been removed from chatgpt on feb 13, a day after wan's death. the lawsuit claims that the chatbot helped wan sidestep her doctors and adjust her medication without medical supervision. this case joins a growing list of lawsuits against openai, including one brought by the parents of 16-year-old adam raine in august 2025.
