Implant restores sight in macular degeneration patients

prima system helps patients with advanced amd read and do crosswords, improves sight with retinal implant and camera-equipped glasses.

the prima system, developed by science corporation, is designed to restore vision in patients with age-related macular degeneration (amd). it works by replacing damaged photoreceptors in the retina with an implant that transmits visual information directly to healthy eye circuitry and the brain. the system consists of a retinal implant with 378 pixels, each with an electrode and two photovoltaic cells, and camera-equipped glasses that capture and process video feeds in real-time. after training sessions, more than 80% of recipients were able to read, do crosswords, and use their phones. this technology has the potential to significantly improve the lives of patients with advanced amd.
