ibm expanded its open model portfolio with the granite embedding multilingual r2 family, addressing the trade-off between model size and language coverage. the new models, including a compact 97m parameter version and a full-size 311m parameter version, support 200+ languages and code with a 32k context length—64x larger than the previous r1 generation. trained on ibm-curated and public data without ms-marco to ensure enterprise safety, the models achieve top retrieval performance for their size class and feature a permissive apache 2.0 license for unrestricted commercial use.
