openai's hardware team used gpt-6 astra to design a device that interacts with the codex coding agent, completing the project in under a week. gpt-6 astra handled every step, including enclosure design, pcb layout, component selection, trace routing, firmware, and user interface. a contract manufacturer produced a small batch of prototypes in under a month, although several revisions were needed due to astra's limitations in accounting for manufacturing constraints. openai plans to feed this data back into future models to improve their performance. openai is also reporting a significant performance jump in a newer internal model, scoring 0.875 on the benchcad 2.0 benchmark, compared to gpt-6 astra's 0.594.
