google research's ai can detect signs of high blood pressure from smartwatch data without a blood pressure cuff. the ai uses a neural network trained on 500,000 hours of sensor data from pulse and motion sensors. in a study of 196 people, the system identified 65.8% of those with high blood pressure, compared to 55.3% for standard in-office measurements. the feature is now part of the google health app, aiming to encourage people to get checked, as over half of those with high blood pressure are undiagnosed.
