anthropic released opus 5.5, its newest model, on tuesday, setting a new state-of-the-art in coding and knowledge work performance. opus 5.5 outpaces the larger fable model in many benchmarks and succeeded in informal tasks that fable failed to complete. the model is also significantly cheaper than opus 5, with output tokens charged at $20 per mtoken, compared to $25 for the previous model. anthropic's ceo dario amodei had previously called for pacing the frontier, deliberately slowing down progress on ai capabilities to match the rate of progress on alignment. this release is subject to the same safeguards as the company's fable model, limiting its use in tasks such as discovering exploits in compiled programs or developing recognizable biological weapons.
