exin therapeutics, a san francisco-based biotech startup, used an ai agent to successfully inject a gene therapy into a live mouse's brain. the agent, controlled a custom-built surgical setup, chose a treatment from 19 options, selected the brain region and injection coordinates, and controlled the robotic arms and injector needle. initially, anthropic's claude opus 5.5 model refused to guide the needle into the mouse's brain, but claude sonnet 5 completed the procedure. this experiment shows how integrating ai models with real-world experiments can make the models more reliable and could change the future of laboratory research.
