Anthropic purchased the entire compute capacity of xAI's Colossus 1 data center, roughly 300MW, to immediately raise its usage limits. This deal, likely worth billions, monetizes xAI's infrastructure buildout as the company shifts training operations to its newer Colossus 2 facility. Unlike competitors Google and Meta, which prioritize internal product development over GPU rental, xAI is effectively transitioning into a 'neocloud' provider business model by leasing capacity to other model developers.
