cara, a platform for artists opposed to ai training on their work, was hit by three major data scrapes in august. the first scrape, on august 13, pulled 12 million works from cara, or nearly its entire public library. the scraper, who posted the data on reddit, boasted that it cost him less than $10. cara's founder, jingna zhang, discovered the scrape through user reports. surprisingly, the scraper later regretted his actions and agreed to collaborate with zhang on an open-source tool to protect artists. however, other scrapers continued to target cara, prompting zhang to launch a gofundme for legal fees.
