a study published in science by stanford and arc institute scientists details the creation of the first functional viruses designed entirely by ai, bypassing millions of years of natural evolution. using evo 1 and evo 2—foundational models trained on millions of genomic sequences—the team generated 300 synthetic genomes, of which 16 successfully infected and replicated within e. coli bacteria. these ai-generated bacteriophages exhibited distinct genetic architectures and varying replication rates compared to natural variants. this demonstrates that ai is no longer just analyzing biology but actively inventing it, creating a massive gap between technological capability and existing regulatory frameworks for biosecurity and dual-use research.
