Democratic Senator Adam Schiff introduced the LIFT AI Act, a bipartisan bill endorsed by OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. The legislation empowers the National Science Foundation director to award merit-reviewed, competitive grants to higher education institutions and nonprofits. These funds will develop K-12 curricula, instructional materials, and teacher professional development for AI literacy. The bill defines AI literacy as possessing age-appropriate skills to use AI effectively, critically interpret outputs, solve problems, and mitigate potential risks.
