astrolab's flip lunar rover, scheduled to launch in november 2026, will carry a high-performance computer made by hpe that will run large language models on the moon's surface. the computer, called hpe spaceborne-4, will enable greater autonomy and real-time intelligent decision-making in space by analyzing data from onboard cameras and lidar mapper. this technology could eliminate time delays and limited bandwidth that plague long-distance communications between ground control and robots in space. the mission will test llms in the extreme environment of the moon, with the goal of enabling more autonomy in future space missions.
