google has introduced skills in gemini chat, a new feature that allows users to save frequent instructions as detailed prompts for specific tasks. skills replace gems, google's equivalent of openai's custom gpts, which are also being sunset. the skills format, which originated with anthropic, is available as an open standard and supports text documents, pdfs, and images as reference material. users can invoke skills by typing '/' plus the skill name, and gemini can also generate skills from previous chats.
