arxiv has introduced a limit of two submissions per person per month starting october 1, 2026, due to an overwhelming surge in submissions driven by ai tools. in september 2026, arxiv received 40,363 submissions, more than double the 20,569 submissions in september 2024, and a sixfold growth in the cs.ai category. the new limit aims to address the strain on volunteer moderators who handle nearly 9,000 support tickets. this change affects researchers and authors, particularly those submitting low-quality or thin papers, and is a temporary fix until arxiv's moderation tools can scale.
